Tuna sustainability highlighted in special session at upcoming SeaWeb Seafood Summit

The 14th edition of the SeaWeb Seafood Summit, to be held in Barcelona, Spain from 18 to 21 June, will feature a host of new experiential learning opportunities for the conference’s sustainability-minded attendees, according to the event’s organizer Diversified Communications.

The premier seafood sustainability conference explores issues of global importance and attracts diverse stakeholders from all areas of the seafood supply chain and beyond, including retailers, suppliers, academics, NGOs, conservationists, government organizations, and more. The event – hosted this year at Barcelona’s Hotel Arts – boasts a three-day conference program as well as a pre-conference seminar, lightning round talks, and a field trip around the host city.

All summit attendees are invited to join in on an intensive pre-conference seminar on Monday, 18 June, which will focus on tuna exclusively. For the seminar, titled “The State of Global Tuna Sustainability,” seafood experts will thoroughly explore issues surrounding the species, “which is one of the world’s most popular and commercially valuable, but also one of the most highly exploited and overfished,” Diversified explained in a press release.

Tom Pickerell, Global Tuna Director for the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), will facilitate the pre-conference forum, giving attendees a comprehensive overview of current issues in the sector such as bycatch problems, lack of comprehensive management strategies, IUU activity on the high seas, and human rights and labor abuses. Pre-conference participants will come away from the session with ways to combat these issues from company, conservation, and collaborative standpoints, SWSS18 organizers said.

Back by popular demand, this year’s SeaWeb Seafood Summit will feature lightning rounds before and after lunch on Wednesday, 20 June. The single-presenter talks, which run for a brisk 10 minutes each, will see speakers introduce a topic and then provide a concise, high-level overview of that topic before leaving the audience with ways to explore it later on. Topics on the docket for 2018 include the future of fisheries monitoring, offshore aquaculture’s mainstream-bound momentum, and more.

Lightning rounds will take place on Wednesday, 20 June, from 12 to 12:45 p.m. and from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.  A full schedule of the conference’s highlights can be found at https://www.seafoodsummit.org/2018-lightning-rounds/.

Conference information and registration can be found on the event’s official website, www.seafoodsummit.org.
