Bioriginal, a subsidiary of Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick, Canada-based Cooke Inc., has acquired POS Biosciences Corp. from Canopy Growth Corp.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada-based Bioriginal produces ingredients and supplements for the human and pet nutrition industries. It has eight manufacturing facilities, 19 warehouses, and offices in Canada; Anaheim, California, U.S.A.; Den Bommel, the Netherlands; and Yokohama, Japan.
POS (Proteins, Oils, and Starches) Biosciences, also based in Saskatoon, has 11 laboratories and six pilot plant facilities performing oil processing, concentration, and molecular distillation, primarily focused on the creation of value-added plant-based bioprocessing of oils and proteins. The company, previously known as KeyLeaf Life Sciences, will now serve Bioriginal as both its largest vendor and customer, according to Bioriginal President and CEO Shannon Sears.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to acquire POS,” Sears said. “POS’s world-leading processing technology combined with its team of scientists in new product development will play a key role in driving innovation for the human and pet nutrition industries.”
POS Biosciences, with 54 employees, will continue to be led by Managing Director Jim Shields, as well as senior company leaders Thushan S. Withana-Gamage, Justin Larocque, and Andrea Laughren. The company has 800 customers in over 40 countries.
“The acquisition of POS firmly positions Bioriginal as the world’s most integrated manufacturer of Omega 3-6-9s for human and pet supplement industries,” Sears wrote on LinkedIn. “We operate crushing, milling, and refining in both Europe and North America, industrial and retail packaging in Europe and North America, and soft gel, tincture, and tube manufacturing in the U.S."
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Sears said the acquisition is the largest in Bioriginal’s history. It also marks its fifth acquisition in the past year, after the purchase of Softgel Co. in November 2023, Kroppenstedter Ölmühle in October 2023, and both the Cana Corporation and Fatory in September 2023.
“With 30 years of global experience, Bioriginal has carved out a niche by scientifically combining ingredients from all over the world, directly from the source, to create innovative and efficacious solutions,” Sears said.
